"Happy Together" is a song written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon and recorded by American pop band the Turtles. It was released as a single, b/due west "Like the Seasons", on February 14, 1967, and peaked at number ane on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the band's kickoff and just nautical chart-topper there. The vocal besides reached the top 20 in various countries, including number 2 in Canada and number 12 in the UK. It was later included on their 3rd studio album, Happy Together (1967).
The initial thought for "Happy Together" came to Alan Gordon at a candy store in Brooklyn, New York.[5] After as members of The Magicians, a New York City-based Rock & Roll grouping, Bonner and Gordon composed the residuum of the song. The lyrics, despite the joyous sound of the music, express an unrequited, imagined love. They recorded two demos, one comprised a unproblematic arrangement of acoustic guitar and hand claps, along with a 2nd demo with more than instruments, recorded at Regent Audio in New York City. The 2nd demo was produced by Ritchie Adams.[6] A session musician, who also claimed to have played on information technology, states that it was more than well recorded. The demo was offered and rejected by a dozen artists, due to its archaic sound. At the same fourth dimension, Bonner and Gordon also heard very positive feedback on the demo from their contemporaries.[7] The Turtles, who had come from commercial and personal bug, institute the demo and, thinking the song as a potential hitting, initially rehearsed it in live performances. They recorded their version in the Sunset Sound studio, with the newly-arrived bassist Flake Douglas arranging the horns and backing vocals.
Later on the vocal's successful release, the band were called to perform on several TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Testify and The Smothers Brothers Show. Music critics have continued to praise the Turtles version for its pop qualities. Information technology was covered by several acts, with the nearly successful encompass beingness from the soft rock duo Captain & Tenille, and featured on numerous movies and Idiot box shows. Thus, the song is inducted in the list of the most-performed songs in the United States of the 20th century by BMI in 1999, and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.[8] [9] Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, singers of the Turtles, were involved on various legal battles due their attempts to copyright "Happy Together" against unauthorized broadcasts, notably with Sirius XM Radio.
Background [edit]
Alan Gordon had served as the drummer of the Magicians since its conception from Tex & the Chex.[x] He wrote and co-wrote a number of songs for the ring, well-nigh famously "An Invitation to Weep" (with Jimmy Woods).[11] Gordon already had many of the lyrics in mind for "Happy Together" merely the chorus of the song came to him at the Park Street Diner in Ayer, Massachusetts, afterward visiting his father. The tune was based on the abiding tuning of guitarist Allan "Jake" Jacobs during the band's concerts.[12] [13] Later a failed effort to convince Jacobs to write the song with him, Gordon finished it with vocalist Garry Bonner.[xiii] [fourteen]
In 1965, Bonner and Gordon started to work with publishers Charles Koppelman and Don Rubin from the Koppelman/Rubin Associates, writing songs for artists selected by them.[xiv] The songwriters cut a demo of "Happy Together" and offered it to several artists including the Happenings, the Vogues and the Tokens, only it was rejected by all of them.[15] [16]
Around the same fourth dimension, California band the Turtles had been struggling with financial and personal issues. Subsequently three Top 40 hits in 1965 and 1966, including Bob Dylan's "Information technology Own't Me Infant" (which led them to existence initially identified as folk rock grouping) and a good-time pop hit with "You Babe" (that would later go their signature audio[17]), their next 5 singles had not charted well. Two of the original members had left to be replaced by Fleck Douglas and John Barbata.[18] [xix] [xx] [21] As an act focused on singles, fellow member Mark Volman explained that the lack of success of the 45 rpm almost led the Turtles to breaking upwards.[18] [22]
As the Turtles didn't write most of the A-sides of their singles, lead vocalist Howard Kaylan mentions in his autobiography and also in the Turtles' documentary that they found "Happy Together" after spending some fourth dimension to mind to submitted demos by publishing companies.[23] [12] [nb i] Volman remembers it in a slightly different way, saying that Bonner and Gordon themselves between the sets of a Manhattan gig asked the band if they needed textile and and so later on sent some demos that included "Happy Together".[24] [25] Because of its circulation with many other artists, the demo acetate was worn out and, according to Fred Bronson, "practically unlistenable" with Kaylan demoing the acetate as "scratchy and viscid".[fifteen] [26] [22]
While interviewed by Grammy Awards, Howard Kaylan said that when he heard it the showtime fourth dimension he considered the recording to be "terrible" and subsequently understood that the rejects by other artists were due to the performance.[27] Kaylan recalled that the demo consisted of "one guy (Gary Bonner) strumming an acoustic guitar while the other (Alan Gordon) sings in a baroque falsetto to get a semblance of rhythm going. Their voices were bottomless".[23] [28] Volman agreed with Kaylan, calling the demo "amateurish, lacking any kind of professional person functioning".[25]
Conversely, Brill Building session guitarist Ralph Casale, in an interview with Songfacts (and probably unaware of Kaylan and Volman'southward statements) affirmed that he had played on the demo and that other session musicians were involved. The performance was in a "Lovin' Spoonful experience" and praised it as much like a "finished product".[29] [nb 2]
It was pretty basic, but you could tell by the melody line information technology was gonna exist strong.[30]
– John Barbata, 2019
Stereogum critic Tom Breihan comments that the Turtles were "hungry" for a hitting and with Bonner and Gordon'southward vocal "it all fit".[31] Volman observed that "Happy Together" was chosen considering they ran brusk of hits:
It [the demo] only included a vocaliser and a guitar, just we could hear the melody and chorus. We were very careful because we had had those records that had been done poorly and we needed something to exist bully. It could accept hands been our last recording. After all, how many failures were we going to exist given by a small, independent record label?"[18]
Recording [edit]
Wanting to record the vocal, the Turtles had the writers travel from New York to California where Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon performed for them live at the Beverly Hills Hotel.[22] [27] [32] According to Kaylan, "they sounded even worse than the demo, but it didn't matter. We wanted this song, and they and their publishers [Koppelman-Rubin] certainly wanted us to take it.[22] The grouping rehearsed "Happy Together" in live performances for eight months, although music writer Wayne Wadhams states the rehearsals lasted only two weeks.[15] [nb three] With the audience's response becoming very positive, the ring members decided to record it in January 1967.[26] [25]
Koppelman/Rubin, equally the publishers of Bonner and Gordon songs, chose how the "Happy Together" was going to exist recorded, substituting the original producer Bones Howe with Joe Wissert and the Turtles' familiar United Western studios with Sunset Audio, that had been the studio for emerging artists like the Doors.[25] [34] [22] "Happy Together"'southward session was engineered past Dusk Sound regular Bruce Botnick.[25] [22]
Similar all their records, the ring – Kaylan, Volman, guitarists Al Nichol and Jim Tucker, bassist Bit Douglas and drummer John Barbata – played on the recording of "Happy Together" (their independent characterization, White Whale, could not beget LA session musicians to broaden or supplant them similar other artists on bigger labels[25] [34]), while existence accompanied by varied keyboards (piano,[35] organ[36] and Mellotron[37]), although whatsoever involved on the recording directly revealed the identity of the keyboardist,[nb iv]and an orchestra of horns, strings and woodwinds.[25] [36] [16]
According to engineer Botnick, the Turtles benefited from a 8-rail recorder, with that the first 3 tracks were for the basic rail, the other three were for the vocals and the seventh was for the orchestra overdubs.[25] [nb 5] Barbata recalled that they recorded the bones track (drums, bass and guitars) in the aforementioned time, and and so overdubbed the vocals and the orchestra.[34] Volman said that the band ordinarily didn't experiment in the studio, and, for him, the process of recording was unremarkable. Botnick agreed with him, stating that the session was brusque, and he would be surprised if it lasted more than three hours, "perhaps another three hours to practice vocals, and it was basically done".[25] Kaylan wrote that he recorded his lead vocals in one have.[22] The basic runway was cut in fifteen takes co-ordinate to Fred Bronson's book The Billboard Book of Number One Hits,[26] but Barbata presumed that they accomplished a satisfying audio in just two takes.[34]
Bit [Douglas] was, besides being a really fine bass player and splendid vocalizer, also a great arranger, who did near of the arrangements on 'Happy Together.' He is very instrumental in what would be idea of as the production.[42]
– Marker Volman, 2002
Although some members of the band contributed to the record's arrangements, probably the almost cited is from Scrap Douglas.[43] [eight] [12] With only nine months in the group, Douglas proved to be important for the record by arranging the horns and the backing vocals.[22] Both Kaylan and Volman praised his arrangements, with the onetime stating that "Chip knew what he wanted to hear and he actually heard in his head the blend of horns and voices. He wanted to take the flutes echo the high voices and the horns be the eye voices".[32] John Barbata credited himself for creating "those pulsate parts that helped brand information technology [the tape] magical".[44]
Later on the orchestra was overdubbed, Kaylan stated that he remembered that he took mono acetate to his domicile and started to hear information technology numerous times. "I just couldn't believe how well the orchestra sat with the rails, and how well the vocals blended, and only the overall mysterious sound we got. We knew information technology was gonna be a No.i record".[34] He noted that the song's production had sparse instrumentation in some portions while other segments were described as beingness "and then 'Wall of Sound'", referring to the product methods of record producer Phil Spector consisting of heavily layered instrumentation optimized for mono, indicating his influence on Wissert.[45]
Composition [edit]
"Happy Together" was originally published in the key of East minor,[46] but Wadhams and music teacher Emily Langerholc observed that the Turtles' recording is in F♯ small-scale during the verses and F♯ major on the chorus.[47] [48] The song is in common time with a tempo of 120 beats per minute.[49] It starts with an electric guitar, followed by drums and electric bass, and so Kaylan starts to sing the first two verses, reinforced by another guitar and reverberated vocal harmonies in the second verse,[fifteen] earlier the chorus begins (consisting of double-tracked lead vocals are backed by 4 role "ah" singing and trumpets).[16] [15] [37] The switch of small cardinal verses to the major cardinal chorus is chosen by Langerholc as "one of the most constructive minor to major switcharoos of all time", citing that the alter is preceded by a C♯ chord (V) at the end of the verse and is in Mutual Tone Modulation.[48] [47] This structure accompanies Kaylan in the 3rd verse, the second chorus, the first repeat of the third poesy (harmonizing with Volman), the "baa, baa" chorus and the outro: the second repeat of the third with the coda, that consists of some other "baa, baa" section with the joining of the orchestra and the band, before the reverb fades the song.[36] [37] [16] [46] Langerholc stated that the outro (F♯ small key verse with the F♯ major cardinal coda) is possibly a Picardy Tertiary.[48] [nb 6]
Many listeners (like Langerholc[48]) idea that the lyrics of "Happy Together" were well-nigh a couple in love with each other due to its cheery chorus and the title, but, co-ordinate to historian James E. Perone, a closer reading in the lyrics ("imagine me and you", "if i should telephone call you") reveals that the love expressed by the narrator is not reciprocated by the other person, with Perone stating that the relationship "is but in dreams, wishes, desires and the listen of the singer".[52] O'Rourke felt that the song "stretches the dissimilarity between the loneliness of existence autonomously and the thrill of beingness together to bipolar extremes".[16] Joe Viglione compared "Happy Together"'s lyrics to Tommy James's hit "Mirage", only while "Mirage" was about an ex-girlfriend, "the Turtles never even get to first base of operations in their laments".[53] O'Rourke observed that is the listener's choice to determine if in the last line "We're happy together", the narrator conquered his beloved, "or if he's but retreated into his fantasy globe for skilful".[xvi]
Release and commercial performance [edit]
"Happy Together" was released as a single in February 14, 1967, backed with the Warren Zevon-penned "Like the Seasons".[54] [55] To promote the single, the ring members performed in a couple of shows, including The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hr in Feb.[56] [57] During this time, Douglas had left the Turtles to produce the Monkees.[43] His replacement was Jim Pons, formerly from the Leaves.[26] With Pons, they participated in video clip shot in March, that consisted of "the grouping running, jumping, rolling and mugging in a park in Los Angeles". Guitarist Tucker remembered it was possibly recorded in the Griffith Park.[58] [59]
According to Volman, the song slowly climbed through the charts, saying that "information technology took peradventure 3 or four weeks earlier it even got into the Top 20". He credits the radio airplay for helping the song to tiptop the charts, on March 25, dethroning The Beatles' "Penny Lane".[34] [26] At that place, it stayed tor three weeks before being knocked out from the meridian by Frank Sinatra and Nancy Sinatra's duet "Somethin' Stupid".[26] In total, the record held upon the Billboard Hot 100 charts for xv weeks.[60] In other countries, the song was mainly distributed by London Recordings.[61] "Happy Together" was the breakthrough hit for the Turtles in Britain, where information technology peak at number 12.[62] [63] In the Canada Charts, it (distributed by Quality Records) stalled in the 2d position, behind the Monkees' "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You".[64] "Happy Together" sold one million copies, and was certified Gold by the RIAA in May iv.[65]
An album of the same proper noun was released in Apr 1967.[55] The Turtles would be called to perform on The Ed Sullivan Bear witness in May 14, 1967,[66] and over again, equally a quintet, in November 12 (Tucker had left for personal reasons).[67] [68] [59] The vocal was performed on other shows as well, both as a sextet or a quintet.[69] [70]
Reception and accolades [edit]
The single received primarily skillful reviews in the American press at the time. Billboard magazine described "Happy Together" equally a "neat folk-oriented detail" that could repeat the nautical chart success of the Turtles' earlier hit single "It Own't Me, Babe (also predicting that the song would attain the Pinnacle 20) and praised Joe Wissert's product.[71] It is similarly described in Cashbox magazine, where they write that information technology is a "happy become-lucky tune-rocker" regarding a boy who has fallen in love. They terminate the review by noting that information technology might become a hit for the group.[72] In Record World, the song was ranked a "sleeper of the week", stating that the group are "happy together", which they had to be in lodge to get the song "into the grooves".[73] In the UK, the single also received praise. In Disc & Music Echo, critic Penny Valentine writes that the group has a "divine audio going" on the song. She positively notes the guitars, which she considers "warm", and closes the review past stating that the lead singer "threads" the lyrics together.[74] Peter Jones from Tape Mirror believes that "Happy Together" starts off tamely which escalates into a "most commercial sort of sound." He also adds that the chorus appealed to him the most. All in all, he gave the unmarried 4 stars.[75]
Since and so, the song has received positive reviews. the Denise Sullivan of AllMusic stated that the Turtles had combined "all their pop, folk, psychedelia, and Zombies-mode harmony expertise" into "Happy Together", while considering it a "pop perfection" and "a about sublime piece of popular heaven".[31] In his volume, Sixties Rock, a Listener's Guide, Robert Santelli chosen the song "arguably one of the two or three greatest popular constructions with its intricate arrangement and great harmonies".[76] Wadhams called it a "brilliant pop production, deftly crafted by Joe Wissert", while observing that "expert pop tin can exist produced by formula, just great popular — like The Turtles' best — combines real music art with a pure, ear-charming entertainment".[36] A reviewer from The Daily Guru claimed that "the way in which The Turtles take a base of folk music, yet requite it a more stone-style edge and mood is the almost obvious deviation, and the manner with which the chorus sections seem to soar away from the rest of the song is where "Happy Together" truly becomes an unforgettable moment in music history".[77]
Some reviewers and authors labeled it "bubblegum popular",[78] [79] [lxxx] but Sullivan and The Daily Guru reviewer observed that, despite its bubblegum sensibilities, the song "rises above it" and its "[later] continued legendary status makes it far more that".[77] [55]
In a less positive reception, Breihan, reviewing all the songs that topped the US charts for Stereogum, praised information technology for its instrumentation simply felt that the Turtles were only using the Beatles and the Beach Boys innovations to "put them in service of the sort of silly no-stakes love songs that those bands might've recorded a few years before in their career. He gave it a eight/10.[31]
Due to its subsequent popularity, in 1999, BMI named "Happy Together", with approximately five million performances on American radio, the 44th about-performed song in the United states of the 20th century,[8] placing it in the same league equally "Yesterday" by the Beatles and "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel. And, in 2007, it was inducted on the Grammy Hall of Fame.[9]
Copyright lawsuits [edit]
Flo & Eddie, legal successors to the Turtles, filed a lawsuit in the New York Court of Appeals against Sirius XM Radio to establish common law copyright on their original recording of "Happy Together". As the song was recorded in 1967, five years before federal sound copyright was established, the grouping sought to plant that such recordings were covered under common law copyright, a nebulous grade of copyright held at the country level, in the hopes of earning royalties from Sirius XM; every bit they did non write the vocal, they could only receive operation royalties. The Court of Appeals had previously ruled that such a common law copyright may exist for the sale of recordings in New York in the 2005 ruling Capitol Records, Inc. v. Naxos of America, Inc..
On December 20, 2016, the Court ruled that no such common constabulary copyright exists in New York for public performances of a sound recording, and that Flo & Eddie could not claim royalties.[81]
On March 20, 2016, Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro released their single "Wolves of Winter", which originally featured the lyric "nosotros have the risk to be happy together" in the pre-chorus, sung in a similar manner to the Turtles' recording. Yet, the lyric was changed due to copyright infringement, becoming "nosotros have the chance to survive the winter", every bit sung in the 2nd pre-chorus.[82]

Bessman goes on to say that "the song's inclusion in Adaptation has as well spurred the solo side of Kaylan'due south career."[83]
When I saw the moving-picture show, the audience started singing forth with it ... It indicated to me that this matter had a life of its ain—and that it was time for me to get off my butt and end my solo album.

Notes [edit]
- ^ According to Alan Gordon's website, Koppelman/Rubin arranged for their West Coast associate, Gary Klein, to submit the demo for the Turtles' label, complimenting Kaylan'southward version of the "publishing companies" White Whale.[14]
- ^ Casale's version about the demo is maybe mistaken, according to Bonner and Gordon' supposed functioning of the demo in the Turtles' documentary,[12] likewise the Kaylan/Volman'south version is the most cited.[23] [16]
- ^ Based on Kaylan's statements, the Turtles establish the song on April or May 1966, but Wadhams wrote that the band constitute the demo on early January 1967.[33] [15]
- ^ Kaylan and Nichol are credited to keyboards by both Uncut, and AllMusic on the album of the aforementioned name, where "Happy Together" is included.[38] Some sites stated that unknown keyboardist, Andy Cahan,[39] [twoscore] played "organ" on the recording, but Kaylan and Cahan himself never mentioned his participation on the vocal.[22] [41]
- ^ The eighth track is possibly for the keyboards.
- ^ A Mellotron and an organ is present in the third poetry and its second repeat, and also in the chorus,[fifty] while oboes (or organs mimicking them) endorse the first echo.[51] [36]
